From the Sidelines: Acknowledging Our Members

Sergio Medina Sr. is retiring from coaching after 38 years.

After an injury closed the doors on his playing career, Sergio thought his involvement with soccer was done. Sergio was embarking on a career in computer programming, learning new coding languages, all while teaching himself English as well. He stated, “soccer language is all I knew”, and an open coaching position with the DeVry Institute of Technology (CUSA) would bring him back into the game he loved. He began coaching his son at the same time.

This was the start of an illustrious career in coaching for Sergio. Sergio led a multitude of teams. El Dorado, Callies Women Premier and Major (where he coached his daughter and eventually won a national title with SAIT), StarLatino of CUSA (the best team in years, he recalls) and the Canadian Chilean Select at the Mini World Cup in Winnipeg. Sergio then went on to coach with Calgary West (CMSA) for almost 10 years. Sergio had the opportunity to travel with his BU15 to China and participate in the Gothia Cup. “What an experience! Those kids will never forget that” he says. They lost 3rd place to Mexico in a game that reached a high of 42 degrees and a rainstorm. Sergio and his team left such a great impression during that tournament that they were then invited to the Paris World Games. Sergio’s grandson, Leo, was the flag bearer as they represented Canada in the opening ceremony of the games. They then represented Canada at the World Games in China, where they were greeted to a standing ovation from over 20,000 spectators. “I hope I don’t forget anyone else! Everything was heaven.” he remarks.

Sergio recalls his time coaching Minor Soccer as “a privilege”. He reminds coaches that you “must leave all those negatives actions at the door. I am talking about the ego. The me, myself, and I. The winning at all costs. They will damage both you as a coach, and especially the little players.” He then adds a message for players. “Remember what it takes to be successful. Always make good decisions on the field, at home, and in life. Your Heart is your motor! Passion your wheels!”

Sergio then sends his final acknowledgments: “Thanks to all of you. To my wife that waited almost 38 years to go on holidays this July and August. Thanks to Bill Malone (CUSA), Glenda Carr (CWSA), Kim Kerr (CMSA) and Jordan Stewart (CMSA). Thank you to the best game on earth.”

On behalf of all CMSA, we want to thank You Sergio. You embody the very essence of why we love this sport, and why we do what we do. Best of luck in your retirement.
